New Bar-b-q grill

This is a cheap BBQ...it even has a top grill for keeping the food warm. Great!!
Got it from my friend Brian in Denmark...he is always good for funny pics and ppt presentations :)

Freak-Bear

Just got an e-mail from Matt with this bear...I saw the article last week when we were camping in the Uinta's. It juts boggles my mind to imagine a 14 ft bear...looking over my house :) Of course, that part is false and it turns out that this hunt has become an urban legend.
More can be found on this web site: http://www.blackbearheaven.com/world-record-grizzly-bear.htm

The urban legend goes something like this:

This is some bear!

The downloaded pictures are of a man who works for the US Forest Service in
Alaska and his trophy bear (killed in self defense).

He was out deer hunting last week when a large grizzly bear charged him from
about 50 yards away. The guy emptied his 7mm Magnum semi-automatic rifle
into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him. The big bear was still
alive so he reloaded and shot it several times in the head.

The bear was just over one thousand six hundred pounds. It stood 12' 6"
high at the shoulder, 14' to the top of his head. It's the largest grizzly
bear ever recorded in the world.

Of course, the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Commission did not let him keep it
as a trophy, but the bear will be stuffed and mounted, and placed on display
at the Anchorage airport to remind tourists of the risks involved when in
the wild.

Based on the contents of the bears stomach, the Fish and Wildlife Commission
established the bear had killed at least two humans in the past 72 hours
including a missing hiker.

The US Forest Service, backtracking from where the bear had originated,
found the hiker's 38-caliber pistol emptied. Not far from the pistol were
the remains of the hiker. The other body has not been found.

Although the hiker fired six shots and managed to hit the grizzly with four
shots (the Service ultimately found four 38 caliber slugs along with twelve
7mm slugs inside the bear's dead body), it only wounded the bear and
probably angered it immensely.

The bear killed the hiker an estimated two days prior to the bear's own
death by the gun of the Forest Service worker.

Think about this:
If you are an average size man; You would be level with the bear's navel
when he stood upright. The bear would look you in the eye when it walked on
all fours! To give additional perspective, consider that this particular
bear, standing on its hind legs, could walk up to an average single story
house and look over the roof, or walk up to a two story house and look in
the bedroom windows

Bore paper re-prints

I recieved the re-prints for the bore paper today...100 prints...wonder if I will ever get them used. I will send 10 of to each of the co-authors, Bob and Martin...and then the rest will probably be lost in time :)

Stars and waves

I have for a long time wanted to take pictures of the nightsky to see if the camera could "see" airglow. On our camping trip this weekend I had a great opportunity to try it out. Unfortunately I forgot the camera manual and couldn't figure out how to keep the shutter open. So I ended up taking a bunch of pictures with 30 seconds integration time and stack them together. I did not see any airglow, but saw a bunch of stars and the read-out amplifier signal :)

Camping trip

Melissa and I went camping this weekend with some of our mushing friends. We went up Diamond Fork canyon and camped out from friday through sunday. It was hot! Got a little sunburn here and there, but also got to use my dutch ovens quite a bit. Made bisquits saturday morning...hotdogs saturday for lunch, pulled chicken and cheesy potatoes for dinner. Sunday morning I made an up-side-down pineapple cake...it was good!

First bike ride

Another amazing day here...it is in the mid 80's but with a slight breeze which makes it very pleasant. Soren and I was playing around outside today...playing with the horses, dogs, soccer etc...and of course, he went on the lawn mover...and he also biked by himself today for the very first time. He was very proud and had a great time.

Research is going well

My research is coming along very well at the moment. Our MaCWAVE paper is accepted for publication and the bore paper continue to get attention. This time it will be brought in Utah State Universities "Research Matter". Pretty cool!

My analysis with respect to propagation nature of the Antarctic gravity waves are on a roll. I think I can finish up the two years of data from Halley Station next week and present them at CEDAR. At this time it appears that there are very few Doppler ducted waves, which may be expected. But it is diffecult to say since we have only a narrow region of wind data available. We need wind from the ground and up to ~120-130 km if we want to nail this down. What we can say is: the capability of the airglow region to sustain a freely propagating wave or not...and that is very important!

Chocolate in apples

The big surprises life holds for a 2-yr old. Soren ate an apple all the way into the seeds. This was the first time he saw those and his first thought was that the seeds were chocolate chips :)
Big was the disappointment when I told him it was a seed and almost as hard as a rock :) I wish I had the camera ready to capture his facial expression.

First round of the hockey play-off

What a first round! My top-three teams all advanced: the Sharks (1), the Sabres (2), and the ducks (3). Wouldn't it be cool to see the sharks vs sabres going at it in the final? The ducks just kicked the flames butt 3-0 in game 7...in Calgary...great job! A team that have been looking impressive is the Devils...but again, the played againts the Rangers who came into the play-off on a loosing streak and was hampered by injured players. The sharks, to me, still looks like the team to beat. Their depth is amazing. Their second line is just as good as the first line and would in many other NHL teams BE the first line. If their goalie and defense can keep up the good play they will be tough to beat. The team that surprised me most was the good ol' Avalanche. Sakic showed again why he is one of the best centers of all time. He IS Mr. Clutch...and my favorite NHL player for years. Teams that disappointed me was the Stars and the Flyers. But again, the flyers played the sabres which I think is the second best team (if not the best) in the NHL at the moment. The scary thing is that the team is very young and could be a dominant team in years to come.

My dream dog truck

Just surfed sled dog central and saw this truck w/ dog box. I LOVE this truck. It must be my graduation gift to me from me :)
I will prefer a different style of dog box, though. I really like the one Mike Carmichael has. Oh well, someday it can happen. By the way, this truck w/ bix is only $27,000...not too bad!
